Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer, EVOH for short, is a random copolymer obtained by saponification reaction of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, the proportion of which is usually 20%~40% ethylene, 60%~80% vinyl alcohol. It can be regarded as a modification of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and its production process is similar to that of PVA.

EVOH has the advantages of high performance, low cost, low pollution, etc. It is widely used in packaging materials, medical materials, textile materials, structural materials, etc., and has broad prospects for development and utilization.

EVOH resin has high barrier property to gas, water and chemical solvent. It is a relatively good barrier material today. It has great advantages in extending the storage period of packaged foods, making plastic packaging further light and not easy to break. There is an important position in the quality of packaging.

In recent years, the production of EVOH in the world has been slow to develop. The production facilities are distributed in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany and Taiwan, with a total annual production capacity of 13.2 million tons, an increase of 2.32% over 2011.

There is no large-scale EVOH industrial manufacturer in China, and the required EVOH is basically imported. However, domestic research institutes have already developed their applications, and many manufacturers have the ability to process EVOH. It is reported that the Institute of Chemical Industry of Forest Products of the Chinese Academy of Forestry has successfully developed EVOH film and determined the process and formula for preparing EVOH.

In recent years, the total consumption of EVOH in the world has increased steadily. The total consumption in 2009 was 97,100 tons. In 2012, it increased to 105,600 tons, of which the consumption in North America was 4.55 million tons, accounting for 43.08% of the total consumption.

China's imports of EVOH are mainly from Japan. In 2012, the consumption was 4,800 tons. The consumption of barrier gas packaging film and the consumption of coextruded plastic sheets accounted for half of the total consumption. The consumption of fuel tanks accounted for the total consumption. 26.5% of the amount.

With the upgrading of China's food packaging products and the rapid development of the automotive industry, the demand for EVOH will grow steadily. It is estimated that by 2017, the demand for EVOH in the world will reach 130,000 tons. China is a country with fast growth of EVOH, and the average annual growth rate of consumption in 2012~2017 is 7.8%.

In developed countries such as Europe, America and Japan, EVOH has been widely used in food packaging such as meat, vegetables, canned fruits and condiments in a long shelf life in the form of multi-layer films or cups and bottles. In China's food, long-term shelf life products are mostly packaged in traditional tinplate or glass bottles. The commonly used plastic packaging bottles are also not filled with high barrier materials. Due to their poor barrier properties, the shelf life of the products is generally only 3 to 6 months.

In the face of a vast market, China can only sigh with sighs, because EVOH packaging materials are still in the initial stage of development and production in China, and many packaging materials, especially food and pharmaceutical packaging materials can not meet the high barrier requirements, but can not meet The domestic market, let alone participate in international market competition.
