There are many kinds of colored lead on the market... water-based oily waxy balabala.... This brand of that brand... How to choose the color lead that you like and suit your own? After reading this, you will not be confused by the color lead.

Among the many fine art media, colored pencils have always had a very special position in the heart of soap. Every time I saw a whole row of colored pencils of various colors, I don’t know why there is a gentle feeling to melt in my heart. It is the touch of other pigment media that can't bring me.

If I ask what my favorite painting tools are, I will definitely say: colored pencils!

Recently, probably because of the popularity of coloring books, colored pencils have become very popular. The brands, types, and grades of colored pencils on the market are dazzling, and users who are beginning to touch color pencils often don't know where to start. Due to the love of colored pencils, we used to spend a lot of time reading books to study the similarities and differences of various brands; we also (had spent a lot of money) bought several sets of different brands of pens to use.

Soapy hopes that for those who like colored pencils, or who want to use colored pencils, after reading this, I will decide which brand and type are best for you.

Buy professional grade colored pencils

For the purchase of painting materials, my concept is to buy the best quality painting materials within the scope of economic ability. Good quality color pencil, high purity of pigment, saturated color, anti-light and anti-discoloration, can be preserved for a hundred years without deterioration. "One penny, one share", this sentence is used in both art paint and paper, which is the most suitable. When we were young, we should have used students' grades and even colored pencils for children's work. This cheap color pencil has low purity and poor light resistance, so it is not only colorless, but also after the painting is placed for a while. The color changes or fades when exposed to light. Therefore, if you are serious about drawing, I suggest choosing an artist-grade color pencil.

"But the color pencils used by experts are not cheap. I still have a beginner and I don't have the budget to buy the best materials. What should I do?"

At this time, I would rather buy a color pencil with a lower number of colors, but the best quality, better than a sub-grade set of hundreds of colors. Because color pencils have transparency, like transparent watercolors, you can use color mixing to bring out more different colors; and to be honest, a set of more than one hundred color pencils, the most commonly used colors are probably less than half, so really You don't need to buy hundreds of colors.

Some entities and online art supplies stores allow consumers to buy only monochrome art paints, so for those with limited budgets, you can try to find out where you are in the art department to provide open-frame options. If you buy a whole set of too bad purses, you may choose a few common colors at a time, and slowly get all the colors you want.

Type of colored pencil

The refill of a color pencil consists of a pigment powder plus wax as an adhesive, plus other additives. Color pencils can be classified into three broad categories depending on the composition of the adhesive: oily, waxy, and watery.

Ordinary people often confuse oily and waxy colored pencils, which are commonly referred to as oil-colored colored pencils; but if you want to pay attention to it, the color pencils made by these two different ingredients still have many differences in their use. Strictly speaking, there is still a little wax in the oily colored pencils, but the main ingredient is vegetable oil. Whether it is wax-based or oil-based as an adhesive, these two colored pencils can be combined.

â–¶ Wax-based pencil:

Generally, the color pencils that are easy to buy on the market are mostly waxy color pencils, which are cheaper than oily color pencils and have more types of colors. These colored pencil refills are soft and have a strong coverage and can be painted like a crayon. However, if after applying multiple layers of color, it is easy to have a wax bloom and form a thin mist on the pigment. This problem can be solved by spraying a protective glue or avoiding it. Paint too many layers of color. Another disadvantage of waxy colored lead is that the refill is easy to break, and it is easy to have small particles of paint falling off during painting. Of course, if you use it carefully, do not apply too much force, these problems can be avoided.

Common wax color pencil brands include Prismacolor in the United States, Derwent Artists in the United Kingdom, Caran d'Ache Luminance in Switzerland, and so on.

â–¶Oil-Based:

The oily colored pencil is slightly harder than the waxy colored pencil, but it can maintain the sharpness of the nib. It can be sharply cut and not easily broken. It is suitable for drawing large areas and is also suitable for drawing details. The color of the oily colored lead is saturated, and the strokes are smooth, but the overlapping colors are not as multi-layered as the wax pen. The transparency is higher, so the way of mixing colors will be somewhat different from that of wax pens. The disadvantage is that it is easy to be stained, so when painting, it is best to put a tracing paper under the hand to protect the already painted part. Another disadvantage is that the price of oil-based pencils is higher.

Common oil-based pencil series include Faber-Castell Polychromos in Germany, Caran d'Ache Pablo in Switzerland, and Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor in Germany.

â–² water soluble color pencil

â–¶Water-Soluble/Watercolor:

Water-based colored pencils use a water-soluble adhesive that dissolves when exposed to water, so you can paint a watercolor effect. These colored pencils are used both wet and dry, and it is easier to paint a large area of color after adding water. However, its color mixing effect is not as good as that of oil (wax) colored pencils. In addition, the use of skills requires more practice to achieve the desired results. Also, the color after dry painting and adding water may be different, so it is also necessary to take the time to familiarize yourself with the effect of adding water to each color.

However, high-quality water-based colored pencils have both oil and water-based advantages, such as Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer and Caran d'Ache Supracolor Soft. Even when used as general dry colored pencils, there are still oily colored lead. The "creamy" brushstrokes; the color after adding water is more vivid and saturated, which is considered to be the top two series in the water-based color pencil label, but the price is also very "top".

Lightfastness and permanent

This is a very important quality indicator for professional-grade pigments such as watercolors and oil paints. Because the creators have spent their time creating works, if they fade after a period of time or change the original color, then the value of the painting is not only damaged. Creators and collectors will also be very sad. Nowadays, more and more color pencil paintings have entered the gallery exhibitions, and many collectors have collected the color pencil painters. Therefore, the color pencil manufacturers have also begun to pay attention to strengthening the light resistance of the products.

There are currently a series of light-resistant grades in pencil pens including Faber-Castell Polychromos, Caran d'Ache Pablo, Caran d'Ache Luminance and the like. Caran d'Ache Luminance is also the color pencil series of the international highest lightfastness standard ASTM D-6901 (its name "Luminance 6901" is also derived from here). The lightfastness is marked with stars, and the three stars are the best lightfastness, which means that the color is less prone to discoloration or fading after exposure to sunlight.

â–²Luminance 6901 is the lightfastness grade indicated by LFI, LFII

â–²Caran d'Ache Pablo indicates the light resistance level with an asterisk

â–²Faber-Castell Polychromos indicates the lightfastness level with an asterisk

Color Range

As mentioned above, colored pencils can draw more colors by color mixing. So, the variety of colors, or the choice of colored pencils?

Each label has its own set of color matching recipes, even if it is the number of 120 colors, even if it is the same color name, but because of the difference in pigment composition, the color will be different.

Therefore, when consumers are choosing, the color is not the first requirement. What is important is the color of the brand. Whether the color selection is practical (for example, the three colors of gold, silver and copper are the ones I have been unable to understand. ) ? Does the brand have a unique color that cannot be replaced by other brands?

â–²Luminance has many unique soft gray and earth tones

Color pencil painters will have their own special preference colors. Sometimes not all the favorite colors will appear in the same brand, so you can buy a single color pencil, choose the color you like in each brand, and make a set for yourself. Custom-made colored pencils are also a good choice.

Finally, it is recommended that you go to an art store that sells open shelves, choose a color, such as red, and then try to draw a similar red color for each brand/series. Which brand is the most saturated? What is the hardness of the refill? What is the fluency of the strokes drawn on paper? Is the refill easy to break? Is it easy to mix colors? What is the difference between transparency and coverage? Is the pen straight up? The thickness of the refill...etc. You can even take a picture of the paper that you usually use to paint in the store to try to see which brand of colored pencils work best.
