The Singapore-based Hamilton Lab is developing a 3D printed toilet to help improve the harsh hygiene conditions in India. Hamilton's robotic HamiltonBot Mark 1 3D printer will use a toilet made of recycled cement mixture for the Madhubani and Darbhanga areas of Bihar.
It’s no secret that poor sanitation is a big problem in many parts of India, the world’s second-largest populous country. UNICEF estimates that India has about 524 million people and no toilets, so public places must be used. Due to poor sanitation, a high abnormal mortality rate is caused.
The solution that everyone recognizes is the establishment of a large number of toilets, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to eliminate the country’s open defecation culture by 2019. But with the coming of 2019, the country needs to work quickly to achieve its ambitious goals. So far, about 60 million new toilets have been built, but about 40 million are needed.
Singapore National Auxiliary Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC) is a 3D printing collaboration program jointly organized by Singapore Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). The Hamilton Laboratory in Singapore may be about to India's health projects make a huge contribution.
Hamilton has signed an agreement with the Indian Rural Information and Action Center (CRIA) to build 3D printed concrete toilets in Madhubani and Darbhanga in Bihar, northern and eastern India, using its robotic 3D printing system. The company said its HamilBot Mark 1 robotic 3D printer was able to build a "quick, beautiful, comfortable toilet."
Bihar seems to have a special need for a quick solution. Dr. Shyam Anand Jha, who has been working on health issues in India for many years, said that the region is seriously lacking in trained craftsmen and that the government has not provided sufficient funds to help the region achieve its goals. In this regard, Hamilton's affordable 3D print toilet can really help.
Fortunately, these 3D printed toilets are not made of typical 3D printed materials such as PLA and ABS, but are made of special cement made from recycled fly ash, which uses coal to generate electricity. The country of the factory is used in large quantities.
