Declaration for the 21st Century (II)

Digitalization of media publishing From the US GATF survey, among the several technologies that have had the greatest impact on the world's printing industry in 1999, electronic file conversion, Internet and World Wide Web, computer production management entered the top 10 for the first time. From this we can see that in the world, new technologies in printing and publishing are moving towards full digital development, like online printing and on-demand printing. These dreams, which can only be realized in the digital age, are now close to us. remote.
Thus, Peking Founder believes that in today's increasingly developed information processing technology, media publishing will shift toward a fully digital multimedia approach.
I. Digitalization of Printing and Publishing Processes From the perspective of prepress input, in the next few years, users will provide electronic documents, digital images, or even just the names of websites to printing companies, and put demands on them through the Internet. These prints are often The number of prints is very small, the delivery time is short, and the user wants the printing factory to help with the issuance. In Japan, companies already provide similar services through a network called IDNG.
From the prepress output point of view, the direct plate processing machine has entered a practical stage, long-term problems hindering the development of CTP plate material is also expected to be resolved. According to estimates by SEYBOLD magazine, the high-speed digital printing market will have fierce competition. CTP and digital printing and direct printing will become the biggest business opportunities.
In addition, the imposition of handoffs will also be resolved. In the future output system, it will inevitably include automatic imposition and automatic folding functions.
At the same time, a large number of CD-ROM publications and INTERNET publications will also emerge in large numbers, resulting in fundamental changes in the input and output of text and images.
Therefore, from the input to the production to the output, the electronic documents that will flow between them will be mainly represented by numbers, and the relationship between the paper-based publications and the electronic publications will mainly depend on electronic documents. The printing and publishing process under the concept of media publishing will go digital.
II. Digitalization of Publishing Information Transmission In the process of media publishing, the flow of information is mainly digital. The relevant departments had organized experts to go to Taiwan to inspect the printing industry. The use of the printing companies in Taiwan on the Internet has surprised these experts: Users can use the Internet to make demands on the printing plants, and India uses specialized management systems to classify these needs and hand them over to the appropriate departments. At the time, there was no basic output management at home.
With the rise of INTERNET, the transfer of information in different places has become possible. At the same time, printing and non-print publishing have become one. People pass information through electronic documents, making the content conveyed unprecedentedly rich; At the same time, the emergence of PDF format enables pictures, tables, text and other content to be delivered in real time in the same format. People can use files in the same format. Conveniently exchange information between publishers, printing houses, Internet service providers, users, even government agencies and factories.
Third, the printing and publishing process management digital from the input of the manuscript to the design, proofing, imposition, printing, postpress processing, process and task management can be achieved through the process management system, using computers to help people classify tasks, Modifications, monitoring, etc. Process management has a complex structure, including output management, process flow, newspaper editing, and task management for TV station editing and editing systems. Output management includes trapping and folding. Functions such as OPI must have strong openness to form a relatively complete output system. Process flow management includes process ticket management, process control, etc. At the same time, system administrators can monitor the completion of each task at any time and digitalize each process interface of the process.
There is no practical comprehensive process management system in China. From an international perspective, process management is also constantly improving. Regardless of how to establish a management system, it is important to unify modules and unify standards. One can't imagine that the same set of pictures or files will produce completely different results in different process management. The same process management must meet people's needs for non-print publishing, exchange information with INTERNET, manage tasks through INTERNET, and use the results of printing and publishing to produce CDs, online publications, and so on. ADOBE's PDF format has made people see this possibility. Many software vendors and hardware vendors support PDF.
At present, Peking University Founder has launched its process to achieve a variety of outputs from the low-frequency field, from the ΦWadi to the turf. It solves the problem of color deviation caused by the inconsistency between proof RIP and output RIP for a long time in printing and publishing. At the same time, it converts the result of the typesetting into PDF through a software called Wenyi, and exchanges information with INTERNET.
The status quo and the future of the three major categories of publishing market: 1. Process management of digital printing and printing 1. System and reality - backward printing process management In today's prepress process, manual or semi-manual management of digital production equipment The modes coexist. Starting from the picture drawing, to the production, proofing, filming, out of the PS version, are completed through digital equipment. However, the process management of many enterprises still remains at the manual level; more sensitive printers with computers and imagesetters still use manual imposition or manual hand-holding. The main reason is that there is no prepress workflow management software suitable for the needs, and the management concept is lagging behind.
People have been paying attention to the prepress process for three to four years, but the mature prepress digital workflow solution has not appeared. There are four main reasons:
(1) The digital prepress operation process itself is still in a period of less stable changes. In particular, the popularity of the Internet and the rise of direct platemaking have brought new variables to the digital prepress workflow.
(2) In different countries and regions, due to the difference in history and development level, the diversity of prepress operations is difficult to apply to management of one standard and one software to adapt to different processes.
(3) The diversity of demand is one of the reasons why the digital prepress operation process is difficult to mature. Due to differences in management methods and management levels, as well as the differences in the prepress process itself, people's expectations and requirements for digital prepress workflow management are difficult to be consistent and uniform.
(4) The openness of the prepress process is also one of the reasons for the immature digital workflow. In the prepress process, the division of labor is open, the hardware and software equipment is open, the data is open, and it is expected to use a relatively uniform and stable process to regulate the prepress process, which is in contradiction with the concept of openness.
The above factors did not make people abandon their efforts in the digital prepress workflow, and more and more people accepted the concept of digital prepress workflow.
At present, the domestic prepress process can be divided into two types, one is the so-called decentralized model. The advertising company is responsible for the design and production, and the output center completes the proofing and filming; the other is the so-called complete type. The publisher is responsible for the design, and the color printing factory completes the production of proofing films. The former represents a new prepress platemaking system, and the latter is the legacy of the traditional prepress platemaking system. In fact, there are few purely distributed or complete prepress processes. Most of the output centers also have their own production, and the color printing companies also produce films for advertising companies.
Analyzing the domestic prepress process from a microscopic point of view, the situation is much more complicated, especially in the decentralized macro purchase process, the concept of the process is not very clear. Grasping the internal micro-processes of the two macro processes can yield the following two micro-processes:
(1) Copy-type micro flow A. The print customer will hand over the original picture, text, graphics, and layout information to the color-printing factory, and clearly define the requirements for picture drawing, binding, the requirement of imposition and handoff, and the font and font size of the text;
B, scan the image, enter the text;
C, image revision and creative production, graphics production, text proofing;
D, layout group version;
E. Proofreading proofs
F, folding, spelling
G, RIP the film;
H, sun PS version;
I. Proofing, the proofing results will be handed over to the printed customer for approval.
(2) Design-based micro-process A and advertising companies complete the scanning, text input, and layout design of the images according to the customer's needs and pictures and texts, and complete the design and production of the layout at one time;
B. proofreading of paper samples;
C. The advertising company will deliver the produced electronic documents to the export center, fold their hands and produce films;
D. The output film is proofed by the output center or proofed by another company.
The replication process is very detailed and the process is clear. However, the data transfer and information transfer between each step in the process are accomplished through the paper media's work order and verbal statements. The design process seems relatively short. In fact, every operation in the replication process is not limited to the design process. The division of labor is not so detailed and the process is not as clear. The process is short, and there are fewer links that need to be handed over and information is passed, but since the production and the filming are selected between two independent enterprises that are far apart from each other, the data transfer and information transmission are accomplished through people and vehicles. of. To sum up, whether in a replication or design process, the interface between each step in the process is done manually. Manually completing the interface means low efficiency and errors; it means that the entire process is unclear and difficult to control; it means that the management costs are high and the process is not smooth.
In addition, in the current two kinds of processes, there are still problems of failures in distribution and inconsistent results. No RIP can achieve 100% output success against all PS files. The reason why people first think of is the issue of creating software and RIP for PS files, but in essence the flexibility of the PS language is the root cause. The results of the same PS file may not be consistent on different RIPs. The results of the two RIP devices are inconsistent. This issue is even more prominent in the process that includes digital proofing. If the digital proofing and filming and printing plate results may be different. Even with the same RIP, there may be differences in the results of proofing and filming.
2. Future development trends In summary, the design goal of the prepress process management system is to take into account distributed and complete processes, taking into account both design and replication processes, completely eliminating manual operations in the process interface, and automating process management. . Take Beifang Fangzheng Prepress Management System as an example, it consists of two parts, namely production process management and output process management. Production process management completes the management of manuscripts, scanning, revision, entry, proofreading, typesetting, imposition (including folding), and outputting of paper samples; output process management completes hand-holding, trapping, proofing, filming, or outputting PS versions. Management of operations. These two systems can be run independently between two different departments, and can also be operated jointly in one department.
