Revision of National Standards for Corrugated Boxes (I)

First, China's corrugated cartons standard system revision Since the invention of corrugated cardboard, corrugated cartons have quickly become one of the most widely used packaging in circulation. After the Americans obtained the patent for "creped corrugated cardboard boxes" in 1874, in the 1930s, large coastal cities in China started to manufacture corrugated cartons and used them for the packaging of some commodities. However, before the 1970s, the development of this industry was relatively slow. Basically, it was manufactured by manual or semi-automated production methods. There was no unified product standard in the country. In 1974, Qingdao and Beijing first introduced an automatic corrugated paperboard production line. The production of corrugated paperboard boxes in China began to be mechanized. Some large and medium-sized enterprises have their own corporate standards.
With China's reform and opening up, the rapid development of the national economy, and the rapid growth of foreign trade, the role of corrugated boxes in packaging is increasingly showing its advantages. Some industries that use corrugated boxes and packaging began to formulate product packaging standards, such as the national standard "needle cotton fabric packaging", the national standard "washing powder packaging" and so on.
In 1985, the National Standard GB5033-1985 Corrugated Paperboard for Export Packaging and GB5034-1985 Corrugated Paperboard for Export Commodities were drafted by China Export Commodities Packaging Research Institute and Tianjin Branch. Subsequently, the Chinese standard GB6543-1986 “Corrugated cardboard boxes”, GB6546-1986 to GB6548-1986 “Corrugated cardboard” jointly drafted by the Tianjin Branch of China Export Commodity Packaging Research Institute, the Light Industry Ministry Packaging Research Institute, and the Tianjin Institute of Packaging and Decoration. Second, there are problems in the current standards discussion With the scientific progress, people's understanding continues to increase, the demand for packaging at home and abroad is also growing. In the standard use process, it must show the limitations of people's understanding at the time of the formulation. Therefore, it is an important task for packaging workers to revise the standards and make them more scientific and complete. Here are some views on some issues that exist in the standard for your reference.
1 Strengthen the management of standards and promptly modify GB5033-1985 and GB5034-1985. These two standards can be said to be the first formulation of corrugated paperboard and carton standards in China. At that time, without national standards, it played a significant role in the development of the carton industry and improved product quality, and laid the foundation for the future development of various corrugated cardboard and carton standards.
When the standard for corrugated boxes was established in 1986, the original intention was to include the contents of the standard in the 1986 edition of the “Corrugated Paper Box” national standard. The commentary under the classification form with GB6543-1986 states: “One type of box is mainly used Export and valuable goods are transported and packaged; Category 2 containers are mainly used for the transportation and packaging of domestic products; Category 3 containers are mainly used for the transportation and packaging of short-distance and low-cost goods.” However, due to the administrative and institutional reasons at the time, it was difficult to The problems of different units are coordinated, and so the phenomenon of the coexistence of the so-called "foreign trade" and "domestic trade" standards has emerged. Since these two standards were formulated earlier and have not been revised, some of them, such as the unit of measurement or the non-statutory unit of measurement, have long been unable to apply to today’s export packaging needs, and the issuance of commodity inspection regulations SN/T0262-1993. In fact, instead of the role of GB5033-1985 and GB5034-1986, these two standards have fulfilled their historical mission and do not withdraw from the historical stage, which will cause confusion and inconvenience in the use of production and trade.
GB6544-1986 was revised in 1998, and its supporting GB6543-1986 has not been revised so far, so that the relevant standards for several inspection methods, corrugated board standards can not be well used in conjunction. Therefore, the relevant departments should organize the revision of packaging standards as soon as possible to give full play to the role of the standard.
2 About the determination of the performance indicators in the corrugated box standards In the past, people have certain misunderstandings about the recognition of the performance indicators of packaging materials and packaging containers. The higher the index, the more advanced it is. Even some indicators have exceeded the limits of the performance of paper materials. Some cartons contain very light items, such as instant noodles, which have high performance standards according to the national standard. However, practical use does not require such a strong cartons to meet the needs of packaging and transportation. Because the indicators on the standard are set high, the supply and demand sides must increase costs, not only cause economic losses, but more importantly because the standard is not appropriate, and a lot of resources are wasted. Human resources are limited. We cannot cause regrets for future generations because of our understanding.
The function of a packaged product is to protect the product, and its strength should be sufficient for packaging, transportation, and storage. Therefore, in the standard, it is the scientific and advanced standard that justifies the various performance indicators.
In the past, standards were usually produced by manufacturers and users. For the sake of their own interests, the indicators in the standards were negotiated. In the future, when the revision criteria were adopted, technical personnel of some inspection agencies should be included in the process, and after scientific verification and experimental verification, each should be determined.
