"Stem Cell Research" Mid-term Summary Meeting of Major Scientific Research Projects

On August 4-5, 2012, the mid-term summary meeting of the "Stem Cell Research" major scientific research project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, "Molecular Mechanisms and Structural Basis of Epigenetic Regulation in Stem Cell Programming and Reprogramming" was held at the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cells.

The opening ceremony of the meeting was presided over by Changjiang Ge, a research institute of the Institute of Biochemistry and Cellular Sciences. Jiang Ge introduced the leaders and members of the panel of experts who attended the meeting. Cui Chunyu, deputy director of the Department of Basic Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Wang Liping, director of the Department of Biomedicine, Chinese Academy of Sciences, deputy inspector of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, Shi Guohua, deputy inspector of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, Fu Guoqing, deputy director of the Shanghai Academy of Biological Sciences Academician Li Lin and Director of the Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Lin Anning attended the meeting. Director Lin Anning gave a welcome speech on behalf of the project undertaking unit. Director Wang Liping and Deputy Inspector Shi Qianghua expressed their support on behalf of the supporting department. Deputy Director Cui Chunyu put forward requirements for the mid-term summary assessment work and hoped to strengthen cooperation and exchanges among various subjects.

The project evaluation expert group members include: Stem Cell Research Program expert group member Xu Ruiming, Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Researcher Pei Duanqing, Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences member, Academician Shi Yunyu, University of Science and Technology of China, Professor Su Xiaodong, Peking University, Shanghai Biochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences Professor Ding Jianping and Researcher Xu Guoliang of the Institute of Cellular Research, and Prof. Teng Maikun, University of Science and Technology of China. More than 30 project leaders and academic backbones from the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, Peking University, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the meeting.

The academic report part was presided over by the project chief scientist Ding Jianping. Researcher Ding Jianping first introduced the overall situation of the project implementation and the arrangement for the mid-term summary. The project team leaders and research backbones in the project reported on the research progress, achievements and future work plans. After carefully listening to the reports of each topic, the participating expert groups put forward very good opinions and suggestions on the project and the next work of each topic. After comprehensive evaluation and evaluation by experts, all four subjects were rated as excellent.

In the process of stem cell programming and reprogramming, cells selectively undergo gene silencing and gene activation, and the transcriptome changes dynamically. These processes are regulated by epigenetic methods, which involve the establishment, maintenance, recognition, and Interpretation, dynamic changes in high-level structure of chromatin, and gene silencing mediated by non-coding RNA. This project uses multidisciplinary research methods and means to explain the relationship between the structure, dynamic properties and functions of key proteins and their complexes in the process of stem cell programming and reprogramming at the cellular and genetic, molecular and structural levels. Understand related epigenetic regulatory mechanisms. Through the implementation of this project, a number of important achievements with significant international impact have been obtained, which has improved the level of research in this field in China and strongly promoted the clinical application of stem cells.

The mid-term summary meeting of the project laid a good foundation for the successful completion of the mid-term evaluation.
