How to calculate the amount of ink?

I have installed and designed ink color matching systems for major printing houses for many years. In the field of ink color matching, although I dare not identify myself as an expert, I dare to admit that I am very expert in ink color matching systems. However, in the first nine months, when the author installed and designed the ink color matching system for the customer as usual, the customer suddenly asked a puzzled question; [How do we calculate the amount of ink to be prepared during actual production? If the amount of preparation is too much, a large amount of waste ink will often remain after production, which wastes costs and increases waste ink inventory. If the budget is too small, employees have to re-formulate, or even shut down and wait, which will affect the production schedule. ]

After listening to the question, the author does not understand the answer at all. However, after many discussions and experiments with customers, I found that a calculation method with fairly accurate results is now discussed with my peers.

First of all, we must know what important factors will affect the amount of ink. Basically, the amount of ink will be affected by the following factors:

Printing machine minimum inking

When the ink is put into the printing press, not all of the ink will be transferred to the paper. "The ink will pass through many different cylinders, and will be dispersed and transferred to it, and finally printed on the paper. So, some parts are not used for printing And wasted on the printing machine, covering the cylinder. In addition, the ink fountain should also reserve a certain amount of ink to stabilize the ink supply, so the ink on the cylinder and the ink fountain should be calculated in the amount of use. This amount can be understood as the Minimum inking volume. In particular, pay attention to different brands and models of printing machines, the minimum inking volume will be different. Of course, the more printing quantity, the minimum inking volume of the printing machine will become irrelevant.

Printing area

The spot color area of the printed matter is proportional to the amount of ink. The larger the spot color area, the greater the amount of ink. Therefore, the spot color area of the printed matter will be used to calculate the amount of ink. If the pattern of the printed area is more regular, of course, it is easy to calculate the area using different mathematical formulas. Otherwise, you can use the following method to calculate:

1) Copy the pattern on the copy paper first;

2) Then cut out the pattern from the copy paper;

3) Put the cut pattern on the scales to calculate the weight;

4) Cut the blank copy paper into 10cmx10cm squares;

5) Put the 10cmx10cm (100cm2) square on the scale to calculate the weight;

6) The pattern area can be calculated by the following formula:

Pattern area cm2 = (100x pattern weight) / block weight

Number of prints

The number of prints is most directly related to the amount of ink used. The more the number of prints, the more ink will be used.

Ink loss rate

In the general printing process, in addition to part of the ink will be lost on the cylinder, some will also be lost when the machine head is used to test the printing effect. In addition, because the ink agitation rate can also be used to adjust the error in calculating the ink volume, the operator can also decide whether to evaluate this.

Printing ink thickness

The thickness of the printing spot color ink does not directly represent the printing density, so it cannot be calculated with the Densitometer. Because the thickness of the ink is quite thin, when the thickness cannot be measured with a densitometer and ruler, it can be calculated by an indirect method with the help of an ink qualitative instrument or an ink spreader. There is much knowledge in using these devices to calculate the thickness of spot color inks, and the author will discuss it with readers in the future.

The thicker the spot color ink, the greater the amount of ink. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the printing thickness of the ink before printing in order to calculate the amount of ink. The author here also advises readers not to reduce the ink thickness in order to save ink usage, because some colors can only be printed under a certain thickness, and the ink is too thick, it will also cause other printing problems.

Specific gravity

The ink specific gravity is the weight of ink per cubic centimeter. This parameter can also be calculated using an ink qualitative instrument or an ink spreader.

Now we can start discussing how to calculate the ink usage. The first thing to know is the amount of basic ink used in each print. Using the printing area and ink thickness of the spot color pattern, you can know the volume of ink used for a printed product, and then use the specific gravity of the ink to convert the volume to the weight to calculate the ink used for a printed product. Readers can also refer to the following formula:

The amount of ink used in a printed matter (g) = printing area X ink thickness X ink specific gravity

After calculating the ink consumption of a printed product, you can calculate the ink consumption of the entire printing order, and then add the ink consumption rate and the minimum ink consumption of the printing press to calculate the ink consumption during production.

Production ink usage = one printing ink usage X consumption rate X printing quantity + minimum ink usage

Readers can use the above formula to try to calculate the amount of ink used in printing production to verify whether this theory is helpful for production.
